FOUR LOGIC PUZZLES

by Bill Graham

linear equations 1. The Math Test

Allan, Bob, Carol, Dave and Florence all received different grades on their last math test (no plusses or minuses). Nobody got a grade with the same letter as his or her name. Allan and the C student studied together. Carol passed. The A and B students live near Carol. Allan got a higher grade than Carol. Dave did better than Carol but worse than Florence. Who failed?

boxing 2. Amateur Boxing Championships

Brown, Todd, Robinson, Slater, Mitchell, O'Brien, Grant and Ford reach the final round of the amateur boxing championships. They were finalists in the 118 lb., 126 lb., 145 lb. and heavyweight classes.

a) Brown weighed in at 117 lb. and Todd was the heaviest winner of all.
b) Grant defeated Mitchell and Slater won by a knockout.
c) O'Brien lost the 145 lb. final by a knockout and Ford hurt his hand and couldn't continue in the 118 lb. final.
Who were the champion and runner-up in each division?

3. The Rectangular Grid

Using the numbers one through eight, arrange them in a 2×4 grid so that no two consecutive numbers (like 1&2, or 7&6, etc.) are next to each other horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

keystone cops 4. Police Department Vacations

Gardner, Plunkett, Maloney, Phelps and Lopez work for the Manhattan Beach Police Department. Each gets two weeks of vacation a year. Last year, each took the first week in the first five months of the year and his second week in the last five months. If each officer took each of his weeks in a different month from the other men, in which months did each man take the first and second week? Clues follow.
a) Plunkett took the first week before Gardner, who took his before Phelps; for their second week, the order was reversed.
b) The officer who vacationed in March also vacationed in September.
c) Lopez did not take the first week in March or April.
d) Neither Lopez nor the officer who took the first week in January took the second week in August or December.
e) Maloney took the second week before Plunkett but after Lopez.
