THE BOOK SALE
The fall book sale started on Wednesday.
The book sale is the big fund raiser for the library.
It is now Sunday and the end of the sale "bag sale" is about to begin.
“Take a grocery bag and fill it with anything inside. Five dollars a bag as you leave,” I announced to the long line of experienced book worms. Two hours into the sale things were going great. Business had been brisk and everyone was pleased to take home a bargain or two. A well dressed lady who was this side of middle age approached with a look of puzzlement on her face. “It is a bag sale, $5.00 a bag,” I said with a tone that comes from saying the same thing for two hours. “I am just looking for one book,” she responded with an accent that indicated that she was not from around here. “Let me check in the library first,” she added. Thirty minutes later she returned and emptied her purse on the table we were using to hold the cash box. She had a cell phone, several credit cards and three dollars in cash. She looked up with a sad face. Not enough for one bag. I moved closer, looked to the left then to the right. In a whisper I said, “I am a sucker for a beautiful woman; $3.00”. I handed her a bag. A big smile appeared on her face as she headed for the sale. Thirty minutes went by and then 45 minutes. Eventually she appeared with a huge book under her arm and a radiant smile that indicated that she had found “the book”. She laid the book on the table with several other books she had found. I looked at the huge book. It was the Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged. Two one dollar bills, 2 quarters, 3 dimes and 4 nickels were taken from her purse and put into the cash box.
Y’all come back” I yelled, but my words were lost in the thoughts of her luck.
